I would say do something classic, like an M14. Handguns can be a real toughy - a lot of little mechanical parts can get you off track, especially if you don't have great reference photos. Shotguns and rifles are pretty good to start with. :D

Just hang in there. :) I'm working on an L1A1 rifle and I keep getting stuck on sections that feel more like chores than work. But dedication is what separates the good from the bad.
